Building Community Capacity FY2018-2020

Pre-Application Deadline: 4:30 PM Monday, November 6, 2017
Application Deadline: 4:30 PM Wednesday, November 22, 2017

Aligning with the goals of CreateNYC, the City’s first-ever comprehensive cultural plan, Building Community Capacity (BCC) is designed to strengthen art and culture’s vital and enduring role in NYC’s low-income communities. This multi-year program supports residents in their efforts to create a shared vision for culture in their neighborhoods, along with a strategic framework to support it. Since community-driven transformation takes substantial time, energy, and commitment, it is anticipated that the program will provide support to selected neighborhoods from January 2018 through June 2020.

To be eligible, neighborhoods must be low-income and engaged in a City-led community development planning initiative. The applicant team must consist of a community based development organization and a community based arts organization. See a list of eligible neighborhoods below.

This round of BCC includes two phases:

  • During Phase I (January - June 2018) selected teams will engage their neighborhoods in a collective process of discovery and visioning, with the goal of achieving a stronger understanding of who is present in their communities, as well as their motivations. They will also identify key challenges, capacities, and resources. As a result, each participating neighborhood will be better positioned to create a shared vision for an equitable and vibrant future.

  • Participants who successfully complete Phase I will be eligible to apply for Phase II, which supports efforts to realize the goals and strategies identified in the first phase (anticipated to occur September 2018 through June 2020).

East Brooklyn Arts and Cultural Alliance is a coalition of mostly arts non-profits and other community cultural hubs in Brownsville, Cypress Hills, and East New York. EBACA has spent the last year working on coalition building and outreach with a focus on how to coordinate events in the community and build awareness among residents and artists of the ongoing opportunities. In particular the alliance is hosting artist mixers, building communications materials, and creating artist registries and event calendars. Additionally in communities still going through neighborhood planning such as Brownsville, EBACA has taken a leadership role in ensuring arts and culture are at the table.
